For the first time since 1972, an American spacecraft with an international crew, commanded by an American, piloted by an African-American, and carrying a woman and a Canadian astronaut, are on their way to the moon.
The Artemis 2 mission, the first manned flight of the Artemis program, launched on April 1, and is currently flying towards the moon for a fly around that will see the spacecraft travel beyond the moon on a free-return trajectory.
The mission is commanded by Reid Wiseman, piloted by Victor Glover, along with mission specialists Christina Koch and Jeremy Hansen, a Canadian Space Agency astronaut.
The spacecraft has completed its trans-lunar injection burn and is currently coasting to the moon.
Their mission is expected to last up to ten days, during which they will be testing the Orion spacecraft’s systems on a lunar fly-by.
