Cuban Government Releases Prisoners Under Mounting Political Pressure

The Cuban government has released 2,000 prisoners under mounting economic pressure, fuel shortages and other pressures from the United States.

The Cuban government said that the pardons for the prisoners were in line with the country’s constitution and were granted for good behavior, time served and health conditions.

The country has faced mounting difficulties after its supply of oil from Venezuela was cut off following a U.S. military operation that resulted in the capture of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and that nation’s cooperation with the United States that has seen the flow of oil from that country to Cuba cut off.

The Cuban government said that the prisoners who were released included young people, women, older adults, as well as foreign nationals and Cuban citizens who live abroad but were imprisoned on the island.
