Artemis 2 Crew Surpasses Apollo 13 Record for Farthest Distance from Earth by Human Spaceflight

The Artemis 2 crew has broken a record set in 1970 by the Apollo 13 crew for the farthest distance traveled by humans from Earth.

As of today, the crew of Artemis 2, consisting of NASA astronauts Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, and Christina Koch, along with CSA (Canadian Space Agency) astronaut Jeremy Hansen have set the record for the farthest distance from Earth traveled by a human mission, surpassing the Apollo 13 record of 248,655 miles set in 1970.

The crew reached the distance during a fly-by of the moon today.

NASA Flight Director Brandon Lloyd, Capsule Communicator Amy Dill, and Command and Handling Data Officer Brandon Borter also marked a lighthearted milestone today by emailing the crew what is now assumed to be the longest person-to-person message ever sent in human history.

The Artemis 2 flight is the first crewed test flight of the Artemis program. It will not land on the moon but will test many of the systems required for astronauts to return to the moon and later land on Mars.
