Eden Man Restored to Competency, Will Stand Trial for Double Capital Murder of Concho County Deputies

An Eden, Texas, man has been restored to competency and will stand trial for double capital murder in San Angelo.

A court record filed in Concho County in late March states that the head or designee of the Vernon State Hospital in Vernon, Texas, has notified the court that Jeffery Nicholas, 33, was “restored to competency” after being committed for “competency restoration services.” Nicholas was to be returned to the court for further proceedings.

The document also states that the defense requested a “jury trial on the issue of competency” and that “good cause exists” to hold the competency trial.

The trial was ordered to be held with Nicholas attending in person on June 19 at the Tom Green County Courthouse, located in San Angelo, Texas.

Nichaolas is accused of killing two Concho County Sheriff’s deputies in May 2021. The two deputies, identified as Samuel Leonard and Stephen Jones, were killed and a City of Eden employee was seriously injured during an incident sparked by a dog complaint at an Eden residence during the nighttime hours of May 10, 2021.

The Texas Rangers reported that during the deputies’ investigation, Nicholas was contacted, and an altercation ensued. The altercation then quickly escalated to gunfire.
