San Angelo’s Meals for the Elderly is getting a new “sheep” from Downtown San Angelo, Inc.
The statue will be revealed to the public at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 9, at the Meals for the Elderly office, located at 310 E. Houston Harte Expressway.
The art installation’s name, “Miss Marybelle Alice,” pays homage to Mary Alice Rodgers, the founder of Meals for the Elderly, and was chosen through a community vote held on the nonprofit’s Facebook page.
Rodgers founded Meals for the Elderly in 1974 with four volunteer drivers serving 16 individuals, with the organization having since grown to deliver approximately 600 meals each weekday to homebound seniors throughout the Concho Valley.
“This is a full circle moment for us,” said Suzanna Valenzuela, Director of Development and Marketing for Meals For The Elderly. “As we celebrate more than 50 years of service to our community, honoring our founder in this way alongside partners who believe in our mission means more than we can put into words.”
The sheep statue was painted by local artist Ashley Perales.
