New Case of New World Screwworm Reported in Crockett County
A new case of New World Screwworm has been detected in another Concho Valley county.
The case was reported in Crockett County, according to Concho Valley Homepage.
The number of confirmed U.S. detections has jumped to 15.
According to the USDA’s New World screwworm confirmed detections dashboard, the parasite was found in a sheep located in Crockett County. The case, which is still listed as active, has a confirmed date of June 20.
The Texas Animal Health Commission reported that an infested zone was established in the county on June 21 in response.
The zone expands into portions of Sutton County and Schleicher County as well.
The infested zone, officially titled Infested Zone 07, was established by the TAHC via an executive order that also placed the following animal movement restrictions for those within the zone:
Warm-blooded animals located within Infested Zone 07 may not be moved outside of the zone without prior authorization from the Commission. Any person in possession or control of such animals must obtain permission and comply with all conditions set by the Commission before transporting the animals beyond the quarantine boundaries.
To move warm-blooded animals outside of Infested Zone 07, the animal must be inspected and treated as required by the Commission and issued a permit or certificate for movement by a Commission representative.
Hides, carcasses, and parts of any animal capable of serving as a host for NWS must be inspected and undergo any treatment deemed necessary by a Commission representative prior to removal from the Infested Zone 07.
Unauthorized movement is prohibited and subject to administrative penalties and/or criminal prosecution.
